The piece is titled “Phoenix in Yew”, and comes from my Phoenix Series where I explore ideas of radical self-acceptance.

Yew wood turned vase

I take wood that is challenging with inclusions, rot, or other “imperfections”, turn them thin, and remake them with fire so they are “perfectly imperfect”.

In this case, this was a new branch I harvested locally. I turned the walls down to approximately 1/8″ and used a torch to enhance the color. I hand sanded up to 800 grit and finished with a mixture of shellac and boiled linseed oil.
